Galaxy 50-50; ReachTEL 51-49

Two recent polls:

  • ReachTEL poll on 23 June came in at 51-49 in the Coalition's favour. This time the self allocated preferences largely reflect the flow of preferences at the last election.
  • Galaxy poll came in at 50-50

Across the four models I run, here are the outcomes ... First the two-party preferred (TPP) model that assumes the house biases across pollsters cancel each other out.

The second model, also a TPP model, is anchored to the 2013 election outcome.

The third model is based on primary votes, anchored to the 2013 election outcome.

The final model is also based on primary votes. Like the first model above, it assumes that the house effects of pollsters cancel each other out (ie. they sum to zero).

Collectively, these models follow.

Anchored aggregation: Coalition 50.6%

There have been two quite disparate polls in the past 24 hours:

  • The Fairfax/Ipsos poll has the Coalition on 49 per cent, with a high other parties primary vote of 14 per cent.
  • The ReachTEL poll has the Coalition on 51 per cent (and I estimate 52.2 per cent if we apply preference flows at the last election to the primary vote estimates). It also has a relatively high other parties primary vote share of 13.7 percent.

Applying these polls to the Bayesian aggregation, I get a 2013 election anchored estimate of 50.6 per cent in the Coalition's favour.

The high other parties vote suggests that the Nick Xenophon Team might either capture seats from the Coalition or at least play the role of kingmaker with its preference flows.

For this reason, it is worth looking at the primary votes. In the following aggregations, the primary votes are construed such that the sum of the house effects across the parties and across the pollsters sum to zero.

These charts suggest both the Coalition and Labor (but more-so Labor) are losing primary votes to the other parties category.

ReachTEL 50-50

The latest poll from ReachTEL has the gladiators evenly matched on a 50-50 share of the two-party preferred vote. However, if I apply the gross preference flows at the last election to ReachTEL's primary vote estimates, I get the Coalition on 51.9 to Labor on 48.1 per cent.

In the aggregation, which is anchored to the 2013 election results, I have the Coalition on 50.9 per cent, to Labor on 49.1 per cent.I should note that the aggregation uses the published ReachTEL results and not my recalculation noted above.

Ipsos 49-51; ReachTEL 50-50

Two new polls; two different directions:

With the magic of poll aggregation, we can see that the trend continues to move away from the Coalition. The next chart is of the aggregation of the two-party preferred (TPP) vote share that is anchored to the 2013 election result.

ReachTEL 48-52

The latest ReachTEL poll has Labor in a winning position with 52 per cent of the national two-party preferred vote, compared with the Coalition on 48 per cent: a four point lead. This is the third poll in a row where ReachTEL has allocated preferences using respondent preferences, rather than preference flows from the previous election. The respondent preferences appear to favour Labor by around a percentage point on average (but contained largely to the first and third polls). In past elections, respondent preferences have proved unreliable.

Because of this methodological difference, I have decided to treat these latest ReachTEL polls as a new series (labeled RT2 on the charts). This raises continuity issues: as it changes the property of the  sum to zero assumption, moving it slightly to Labor. As a consequence, I will use the TPP model that is anchored to the result at the last election from here on to the election.

The sum-to-zero TPP model has the Coalition on 49.3 per cent.

The TPP model anchored to the outcome of the previous election has the Coalition on 50.2 per cent.

Of note: both charts suggest that the Coalition held steady early in the campaign, bur has declined in the last week or so.

ReachTel 50-50; Ipsos 51-49

Two new polls in the past 24 hours:
  • The Ipsos poll of 1497 respondents between 17-19 May had the Coalition on 51 to Labor's 49.
  • The ReachTEL poll of 2407 respondents on 19 May had the Coalition and Labor on 50.

Placing these numbers into the standard aggregation model, yields an estimated national voting intention of 49.9 for the Coalition to 50.1 to Labor - a dead heat.

The primary vote aggregation (and implied national TPP vote using preferences from the last election) follow.
